For Dr. Jayvin T. So, the path to a medical career was shaped by the academic rigor and vibrant student life at the University of Baguio Science High School. Graduating in 2012, Dr. So distinguished himself early on through student governance and service, serving as Youth Development Training (YDT) Director and Sports Minister.
Balancing demanding coursework with leadership duties provided him with his most impactful formative experiences. Guiding peers, managing team dynamics, and making decisions under pressure helped build his organizational and people-management capabilities, skills that continue to influence how he leads and collaborates in healthcare today.
“Reflecting on my time at Science High, the most impactful experiences were serving as YDT Director and Sports Minister, which greatly strengthened my leadership, organizational, and people-management skills. These roles taught me how to guide others, work as a team, and make decisions that continue to influence how I lead and collaborate today.”
After completing his Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science in 2016 and earning his Doctor of Medicine degree in 2021, Dr. So entered the demanding field of medicine. He currently serves as a Medical Officer III and Radiology Resident at Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, where he actively balances clinical patient care and medical research.
Dr. So directly attributes his ability to navigate residency schedules to the discipline, focus, and time management cultivated during his high school years.
In addition to academic discipline, everyday cultural practices at Science High left an enduring mark on his professional outlook. Simple, daily gestures of respect, such as a respectful nod or addressing others as ading, manong, or manang, instilled a lasting sense of humility. In his medical practice today, these small acts of respect shape how he communicates with mentors, collaborates with hospital colleagues, and interacts empathetically with patients.
Although his schedule keeps him busy, Dr. So carries the core values of UB Science High, discipline, perseverance, and respect, as central pillars of his personal and professional identity.
Looking back at his journey, he also offers a thoughtful perspective on how high school practices might evolve to serve future generations. He envisions a shift away from traditional physical forms of discipline toward constructive mentorship, encouragement, and positive reinforcement, ensuring students build responsibility and real-world resilience in a supportive environment.
From guiding student activities in high school to managing clinical duties and radiology research, Dr. Jayvin T. So exemplifies how a strong foundation at UB Science High prepares graduates to excel and serve their communities.
Dr. Jayvin T. So’s journey exemplifies the power of values-based education in fostering community leaders.
