The University of Baguio celebrates with pride an international milestone achieved by one of its own, Renden Oppas, who claimed the World Boxing Council Australasia Minimumweight Championship on April 11, 2026, at the Melbourne Pavilion. Known in the ring as “Take Over,” Mr. Oppas delivered a commanding performance marked by discipline, endurance, and tactical precision, earning a unanimous decision victory over Australian contender Kha Lu in an electrifying eight-round contest. The win not only underscored his growing dominance in the sport but also cemented his reputation as one of the Philippines’ most promising homegrown boxing talents.

Hailing from Saclit, Sadanga in Mountain Province, Mr. Oppas is a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Criminology and a proud member of Class Salaknib-Diwa 2025. His journey from the highlands of the Cordillera to the international boxing stage reflects more than athletic success; it embodies the values of discipline, perseverance, and excellence cultivated during his years at the University of Baguio. His achievement stands as a powerful testament to the institution’s commitment to developing individuals who excel both professionally and personally, inspiring current students and fellow alumni to pursue their ambitions with the same determination and grit.

Mr. Oppas’ triumph resonates beyond the ring, contributing to the broader narrative of Filipino excellence in global sports. It reinforces national pride while highlighting how local talent, when nurtured and given opportunity, can thrive on the world stage. Moreover, his accomplishment aligns with key global development priorities, particularly the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. His journey promotes Good Health and Well-being by exemplifying how sports cultivate discipline and holistic wellness; advances Quality Education through the role of academic institutions in shaping well-rounded individuals; reflects Reduced Inequalities by demonstrating that athletes from diverse backgrounds can achieve global recognition; and supports Partnerships for the Goals, as international sporting events foster cultural exchange, mutual respect, and cooperation among nations. In every sense, Renden Oppas’ victory is not only a personal achievement but also a meaningful contribution to both national pride and global development.
