“What once seemed like a distant dream became possible through determination, faith, and the gift of opportunity.”
Written by Eileen Faith Catalino, UB Alumna
Most of the times success story begins with an opportunity, and mine began when the University of Baguio became the bridge that connected me to the Palawan Group Scholarship Program. What started as a chance to receive financial assistance became a life-changing journey filled with growth, perseverance, and hope. As I proudly celebrate my graduation, I look back with a grateful heart on how this scholarship helped turn my dreams into reality.
Determined to continue my studies, I became a working student during my first year in college. While my classmates focused solely on their academics, I spent my Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays working in the production area of Good Shepherd, helping make ube jam and other products. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, I attended classes. Balancing work and studies was exhausting. There were nights when I barely slept because I still had assignments and lessons to review after work. Despite the hardships, I kept going because I knew education was my path toward a better future.
Then, during my first year in college, in the second semester, a life-changing opportunity came. One of my professors announced the Palawan Group Scholarship Program. Without hesitation, I submitted my application and prayed for the best. Out of hundreds of applicants, I was blessed to be chosen as one of the scholars. I still remember how grateful and emotional I felt when I received the good news. Becoming a scholar allowed me to focus on my studies without the constant worry of financial challenges. More than financial assistance, it gave me peace of mind and the chance to pursue my goals with confidence.
The scholarship encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and become more active in school, eventually serving as a student leader in our Financial Management organization. It also gave me opportunities to participate in meaningful activities that strengthened my leadership skills and sense of social responsibility. Beyond supporting my education, the scholarship allowed me to help my family, purchase a laptop for my studies, and cover some of my graduation expenses.

Of course, my college journey was not without challenges. There were sleepless nights, overwhelming academic requirements, moments of self-doubt, and times when I felt like giving up. I especially remember my third year in college, when our activities, thesis, feasibility study, and case study were all assigned at the same time. It was overwhelming, but I had no choice but to face the challenge. When I reached my fourth year, I thought the challenges would become easier, but I was proven wrong. During my internship, I stepped outside the four pillars of the University and experienced the realities of working in a professional environment. At the same time, completing group requirements and other academic responsibilities tested my patience and perseverance. Looking back, I realize that these difficult moments helped me become more resilient and determined, making this achievement even more meaningful.
To the University of Baguio and to my department, School of Business Administration and Accountancy, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for providing me with a quality education, countless opportunities for growth, and a nurturing environment where I was able to discover my potential. Thank you for serving as my second home throughout my college journey and for equipping me with the knowledge, values, and skills that will guide me as I embark on the next chapter of my life. I will always be proud to be a product of the University of Baguio.
To the Palawan Group family, thank you for believing in me and investing in my future. Your scholarship was more than just financial assistance; it gave me hope, motivation, and the opportunity to pursue my dreams with confidence. More than helping me earn my degree, you helped shape me into a stronger and more confident individual. I will always be grateful for your support and for the lasting impact you have made on my life.
To the Office of Student Affairs, I am deeply grateful for your guidance and support throughout my four-year college journey. I would especially like to thank Ma’am Joanne Uraga, who, despite her busy schedule, always made time to patiently monitor my academic progress and assist me whenever I encountered challenges in my studies. Your dedication, encouragement, and genuine concern played a significant role in helping me reach this milestone. I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to the Former Director of OSA during my academic stay, Sir Froilan Aspa, who never failed to remind and encourage us to stay focused on our studies, pursue our goals, and strive for success. Your support and motivation have been invaluable throughout my journey.
To my co-scholars, continue doing your best and stay focused on your goals in life. I know the journey can be difficult, but I promise that all your hard work and sacrifices will be worth it in the end. Never take for granted the opportunity that has been given to you at this stage of your life. Make the most of it, keep believing in yourself, and continue striving for your dreams.
To my father, thank you for your sacrifices, hard work, and unwavering support throughout my journey. Your strength, perseverance, and love have inspired me to keep going even during difficult times. This achievement is as much yours as it is mine, and I will always be grateful for everything you have done for our family.
As I close this chapter of my life, I carry with me a heart full of gratitude for everyone who became part of my journey. This achievement is not mine alone; it is the result of the support, guidance, and opportunities given to me by my family, the University of Baguio, the Office of Student Affairs, and the Palawan Group of Companies. As I move forward, I will continue to uphold the values and lessons I have learned as a scholar and strive to make a positive impact on others. Thank you for being part of my success story and for helping me turn my dreams into reality. As I always say, success becomes even more meaningful when it is shared with kind, supportive, and inspiring people who believe in you every step of the way.
Agyamanak unay kadakayo amin. This graduation is not the end of my journey, but the beginning of a future made possible by your support and belief in me.
